Violence in Schools – Case Studies

At is most basic level, all educators, whether permanent or occasional, have a LEGAL obligation to report workplace violence and serious student incidents. We have legal requirements as workers under the MOL and legal requirements as Educators under the MOE.

Trying to figure out which reporting form is required for which situation is the challenge, and sometimes there may not be one completely right answer.

On Tuesday, Ms. K reported that she was intervening with students during an incident in Art class when one of the grade 6 students, who was fairly new to the school, threatened her with a pair of scissors. She called the office for assistance to deescalate the situation. The student had not
demonstrated this type of behaviour since being at the school and there was no documentation in the OSR to indicate a history of this type of behaviour. Ms. K did not require First Aid, but she was quite upset.
