Answers to Case Studies

Here are the answers to the Case Studies:

Case Study 1

A grade 1 student with a safety plan escalates during class and grabs the arm of one of the other students in the class, biting the arm and breakingthe skin. As per the safety plan, support staff are summoned immediately and the teacher evacuates the room with the other students.

  • Verbally report incident to principal? – YES.
  • Call the police? – No.
  • Submit a Safe Schools Incident Report (PPM 145)? – Yes, this was a serious incident between students.
  • Call the parents of the students involved? – Once a Safe School Incident Report is filed, it becomes the responsibility of the Administrator to contact the parents of students involved.
  • Submit an Employee Incident-Accident-Injury Reporting Form? – NO. This is also a form for the Educator.

Case Study 2

As activity time draws to a close, a Kindergarten student is still sitting at a table drawing pictures with markers. An educator goes over to the table and says it’s time to tidy up and reaches over to collect the markers. The student says, “No, I want to draw” and pushes the educator’s arm away, hitting the educator and scratching her arm.

  • Verbally report incident to principal? – YES
  • Call the police? – NO
  • Submit a Safe Schools Incident Report (PPM 145)? – No. This was not an offense that would be considered for suspension.
  • Call the parents of the students involved? – YES. This would be the Educator’s responsibility since a Safe School Incident Report was not filed.
  • Submit an Employee Incident-Accident-Injury Reporting Form? – Yes. The Educator was injured. Although it may seem minor, this form is a necessary, and protects the worker in the event a WSIB claim is needed. (Example – what if the scratch becomes infected and requires medical intervention?)

Case Study 3

On Tuesday, Ms. K reported that she was intervening with students during an incident in Art class when one of the grade 6 students, who was fairly new to the school, threatened her with a pair of scissors. She called the office for assistance to deescalate the situation. The student had not demonstrated this type of behaviour since being at the school and there was no documentation in the OSR to indicate a history of this type of behaviour. Ms. K did not require First Aid, but she was quite upset.

What actions should be taken?

Do you:

  • Verbally report incident to principal? – YES
  • Call the police? – This is a discretionary call. Students under 12 will not be charged. However, it is believed that sometimes, early intervention by police can be beneficial to students. consideration of student history, home life, etc would have to be made.
  • Submit a Safe Schools Incident Report (PPM 145)? YES! Quite often the SSIR is student on student. however, in this case a weapon was used in a threatening manor against an Educator so it must be completed and submitted to your principal.
  • Call the parents of the students involved? – Once the SSIR is submitted, this becomes the responsibility of the principal.
  • Submit an Employee Incident-Accident-Injury Reporting Form? Yes! There may not have been a physical injury, but it was still an incident that may have emotional repercussions for the member.
